Deviation from the Comics[]

The comic book and the show do differ on various points. The first apparent change is Willy being American instead of Canadian, and resident of San Francisco. Willy in both the show and the comics doesn't have a strong relationship with his parents though the reason differs slightly. In the the show his parents are both as in the comics happily married but also in his mind rather average and unexciting. In the comics his parents are economically and socially left while Willy is more of the political right. His parents tend to leave him alone at the house to go to political rallies and protests. This element is left out of the show but in the comics plays a role in why he doesn't tell his parents about the Toad Wars- he knows they would not support him going to war as they are both devoted pacifists. They do however as in the show deeply love their son which makes what happens in the final issue both terrifying and tragic. That being that his parents turn off the machine that allows Willy to travel between worlds believing he accidentally left it on despite them reminding him about energy conservation (in the show the power bill is mentioned instead). Since he never told them about the Toad Wars they have no idea that they just sealed him in another dimension, nor that turning the machine back on will allow him to return. In both the comics and show this is Willy's fate.
